Victoria Falls Guide 2025–2026: The Smoke That Thunders

May 15, 202511 min readSimba Beyond Africa Safaris

Victoria Falls is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World — a curtain of water 1.7 km wide plunging 108 meters. This guide covers both the Zambia and Zimbabwe sides, best activities, timing, and how to combine it with a safari.

The local Tonga people called it "Mosi-oa-Tunya" — The Smoke That Thunders. When Scottish explorer David Livingstone first saw it in 1855, he declared it "the most wonderful sight I had witnessed in Africa." Nearly 170 years later, Victoria Falls still leaves every visitor speechless.

Victoria Falls: The Numbers

  • Width: 1,708 meters (the widest curtain of falling water on Earth)
  • Height: 108 meters (twice the height of Niagara Falls)
  • Flow rate: 500 million liters per minute at peak (March–April)
  • Spray height: Up to 400 meters, visible from 50 km away
  • UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1989
  • One of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World

Zimbabwe Side vs. Zambia Side

Zimbabwe (Livingstone/Victoria Falls Town)

The Zimbabwe side offers the most panoramic views of the falls. The Victoria Falls Rainforest Walk runs along the gorge opposite the main falls, providing 16 viewpoints across 1.7 km.

Pros:

  • Best overall views — 70% of the falls face Zimbabwe
  • More developed town with restaurants, shops, and nightlife
  • Rainforest Walk is a world-class experience
  • The Lookout Café — stunning gorge views over dinner

Cons:

  • Cannot swim in Devil's Pool
  • Less intimate experience than Zambia side

Zambia (Livingstone)

The Zambia side puts you right on top of the action. You can stand at the very edge of the falls, swim in Devil's Pool, and walk across the knife-edge bridge above the Eastern Cataract.

Pros:

  • Devil's Pool — swim at the edge of the falls!
  • Livingstone Island lunch experience
  • Knife-edge bridge walk
  • More intimate, less crowded

Cons:

  • Fewer viewpoints overall
  • During low water (October–December), the Zambia side can be dry

Our recommendation: Visit both sides. A KAZA UniVisa ($50) allows entry to both countries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which side of Victoria Falls is better — Zambia or Zimbabwe?
Zimbabwe offers the best overall view (70% of the falls face Zimbabwe). The Rainforest Walk provides 16 viewpoints. Zambia is better for up-close experiences like Devil's Pool and Livingstone Island. Ideally, visit both sides.
When is the best time to visit Victoria Falls?
February–May has the highest water volume (dramatic but very misty). June–August offers the best balance of water and visibility. September–December has lower water but reveals the rock face and allows Devil's Pool access. Each season offers a different experience.
Can you swim in Victoria Falls?
Yes! Devil's Pool on the Zambian side is a natural infinity pool right at the edge of the falls. It's accessible from mid-August to mid-January when water levels are lower. It's safe when guided — the rock lip prevents you from going over.
