Discover Samburu β Kenya's wild north with unique species found nowhere else. Reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, gerenuk, and the famous Samburu warriors await.
Kenya's Wild Northern Frontier
Samburu National Reserve, set in Kenya's dramatic semi-arid north, offers a safari experience that's distinctly different from the green grasslands of the Masai Mara. The landscape here is stark and beautiful β red earth, rocky outcrops, doum palms lining the Ewaso Ng'iro River, and the vast blue sky of the northern frontier. The wildlife is unique, the culture is captivating, and the sense of wilderness is palpable.
At just 165 square kilometres, Samburu is compact but incredibly productive. The Ewaso Ng'iro River, which flows through the reserve, is a lifeline that draws wildlife from the surrounding arid lands. Elephant herds, large predators, and the famous 'Samburu Special Five' species all concentrate along its banks, making game viewing focused and rewarding.
The Samburu Special Five
Samburu is famous for five species found here but not in Kenya's more popular southern parks: the reticulated giraffe (with its beautiful net-like coat pattern), Grevy's zebra (larger with narrower stripes β endangered), Beisa oryx (with elegant long horns), the gerenuk (a gazelle that stands on its hind legs to browse β utterly charming), and the Somali ostrich (with blue legs and neck).
These species add genuine variety to a Kenya safari. If you've already seen wildebeest, common zebra, and Masai giraffe in the Mara, the Samburu species feel fresh and exciting. The gerenuk in particular β standing upright on its back legs like a miniature giraffe β is one of Africa's most endearing wildlife sights.
Predators and Elephants
Samburu supports healthy predator populations. Leopards are relatively common along the Ewaso Ng'iro's riverine forest. Several lion prides patrol the reserve, and the Save the Elephants research base here means some of Africa's best-studied elephants wander through camp. Wild dogs pass through seasonally.
Samburu Culture
The Samburu people β cousins of the Maasai β maintain a semi-nomadic pastoral lifestyle in the lands surrounding the reserve. Their warriors, adorned with elaborate beadwork and ochre body paint, are among East Africa's most striking cultural figures. Lodge-arranged cultural visits provide genuine interactions that support local communities.
A perfect Kenya combination: 4 nights Masai Mara + 2 nights Samburu + 2 nights Amboseli = Kenya's ultimate safari circuit. Add Samburu to your Kenya safari.
